What is activation rate?
Activation rate is the percentage of new sign-ups who reach a defined "activation" milestone — the first moment they get real value from the product, such as creating a first project or seeing their first data.
Also called: Activation, Aha moment

How is activation rate calculated?
Activation rate = new users who reached the activation event within N days ÷ new sign-ups × 100
The hard part is choosing the event. A good activation event is something a user does early, that most retained users did, and that most churned users didn't. It's typically tied to the product's core value, not to a setup chore.
Activation examples
Example: 800 people sign up in a month; 440 install the tracking script and receive their first pageview within 7 days. Activation rate = 55%. Of activated users, 22% convert to paid; of non-activated, 1%. That gap says every extra activated user is worth far more than an extra sign-up.
| Product | Possible activation event |
|---|---|
| Web analytics | First real pageview received from the user's site |
| Team chat | A team sends its first 50 messages |
| Invoicing tool | First invoice sent |
| Design tool | First file shared with a collaborator |
Why activation rate matters
Activation sits between acquisition and retention. Improving it is often the highest-leverage growth work because it multiplies the value of all existing traffic: the same sign-ups produce more paying users.
Common activation pitfalls
- Picking a vanity event like "completed onboarding tour."
- No time window, so a user who activates after six months counts the same.
- Ignoring segments — activation by acquisition channel often explains differences in paid conversion.
How to track activation with VisitTrack
Send a signup event and an activation event (for example first_project_created), from the browser or from your server, and build a funnel from sign-up to activation to payment. With identify, each person's traits and events appear in the People tab, and filtering the Overview by the activation goal shows which channels bring users who activate.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good activation rate?
It depends heavily on how demanding the activation event is and on the product. Measure it consistently, by sign-up cohort and channel, and focus on improving it over time.
What is the difference between activation and conversion?
Conversion is reaching a business goal, such as a sign-up or payment. Activation is a user reaching first value inside the product after signing up, and it usually predicts whether they will convert to paid and stay.
