Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Google Analytics in 2026?

It depends on what you need GA4 for. For a simple, cookie-free traffic dashboard, Plausible, Fathom and Simple Analytics are the established picks; for revenue attribution (which channel brought paying customers), VisitTrack or DataFast; for a free, self-hosted option, Umami or Matomo. The full breakdown is in our Google Analytics alternatives guide.

How were these alternatives lists researched?

Every price, free tier and limit comes from the vendor's own public pricing page and documentation, checked in October 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, the page says so instead of estimating. Each list is chosen for that tool's users — Hotjar alternatives are replay and heatmap tools, Mixpanel alternatives are product analytics tools — rather than one list reused everywhere.

Is VisitTrack included in its own lists?

Yes, where it genuinely fits, and with its real drawbacks: it's a hosted-only product, it's newer than most tools listed, it has no free plan (a 14-day trial, then from $5 a month), and it uses a first-party cookie by default unless you switch on cookieless or EU-only cookieless mode. On pages where it isn't a strong fit, we say so.

Which analytics tools work without a cookie banner?

Tools that store no identifier on the visitor's device — Plausible, Fathom, Simple Analytics, Umami, Cloudflare Web Analytics, and VisitTrack in its cookieless mode — are generally designed so a consent banner isn't needed for analytics under the GDPR and ePrivacy rules. Whether you need one still depends on everything else on your site; this is general information, not legal advice. See cookieless tracking for how it works.

What's the difference between web analytics and product analytics?

Web analytics answers where visitors come from and what they read (sources, pages, countries, campaigns); product analytics answers what identified users do inside your app over time (funnels, retention, cohorts, feature usage). Plausible or Fathom are web analytics; Mixpanel, Amplitude and PostHog are product analytics. Many teams run one of each.
