What is funnel drop-off?

Funnel drop-off is the share of visitors who complete one step of a funnel but don't reach the next one — the leak between two stages of a conversion path.

Also called: Drop-off rate, Funnel abandonment

Updated

How is drop-off rate calculated?

Drop-off rate = (visitors at step N − visitors at step N+1) ÷ visitors at step N × 100

Drop-off rate is the complement of step conversion: a 30% step conversion is a 70% drop-off.

Funnel drop-off example

1,000 visitors start checkout, 640 enter payment details and 520 complete payment. Drop-off is 36% at the first step and 19% at the second. In absolute terms the first step loses 360 people and the second 120 — so even though both look "bad," the first is three times the opportunity.

How to find the cause of a drop-off

  • Segment the step by device, browser, country and channel. A drop concentrated on mobile Safari is a bug, not a pricing problem.
  • Watch session replays of people who dropped at that step.
  • Look for errors and rage clicks on the step's page.
  • Check time between steps. Long gaps point to confusion or a hand-off (email verification, waiting for a teammate).
  • Ask. An exit survey on the step catches objections analytics can't.

Why funnel drop-off matters

Every improvement at a step multiplies through every later step. Halving the drop-off at sign-up raises paid conversion by the same factor without needing a single extra visitor — usually cheaper than buying more traffic.

Drop-off pitfalls

  • Treating a natural exit (a thank-you page) as a leak.
  • Reading a percentage on a tiny step as meaningful.
  • Fixing the largest percentage instead of the largest absolute loss.

How VisitTrack helps diagnose drop-off

VisitTrack's funnels show visitors and drop-off at every step, with an optional time limit between steps. To see why, open session replays for that page, check the automatic rage_click and js_error events (see script configuration), and look at the click heatmap for the step's page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal funnel drop-off rate?

It varies widely by step and product, so there's no reliable universal number. Compare each step against its own history and against segments, such as mobile versus desktop, to find unusual losses.

How do I reduce funnel drop-off?

Find where the biggest absolute loss happens, segment it to locate the cause, watch replays of visitors who dropped, then fix bugs, remove unnecessary fields or steps, and clarify the next action.
