How many visitors do you need to hit your MRR goal?
Work backwards through your funnel. A revenue target at a given price is a number of paying customers; your trial-to-paid rate turns that into signups; your visitor-to-signup rate turns signups into visitors. Churn adds the customers you’ll lose along the way and have to replace. The calculator does all four steps and spreads the result over the months you give yourself.
It’s a planning model, not a forecast. Its value is in showing which lever matters most: for most early SaaS products, a modest improvement in conversion moves the traffic requirement more than any realistic marketing push.
The formula
Customers needed (N) = ⌈ Target MRR ÷ ARPA ⌉Visitor → customer = Visitor→signup rate × Signup→paid rateNew customers / month = (N − N₀(1 − c)ᵀ) × c ÷ (1 − (1 − c)ᵀ) (no churn: (N − N₀) ÷ T)Visitors / month = New customers per month ÷ Visitor→customerVisitors / month to hold N afterwards = N × c ÷ Visitor→customerWorked example: $10k MRR at $29 a month
- Customers needed: $10,000 ÷ $29 = 344.8, so 345 paying customers.
- Funnel: 3% of visitors sign up for a trial and 15% of trials pay, so 3% × 15% = 0.45% of visitors become customers — 1 in 222.
- Without churn, 345 customers over 12 months is 28.75 a month, or 28.75 ÷ 0.0045 ≈ 6,389 visitors a month.
- With 4% monthly churn you lose customers while you build, so you need about 35.6 new customers a month: roughly 238 signups and 7,918 visitors a month (about 260 a day), or 95,000 visitors over the year.
- Once you’re at $10k MRR, holding it takes 345 × 4% = 13.8 new customers a month — about 3,067 visitors a month.
How conversion rates change the traffic you need
| Visitor → signup | Signup → paid 10% | Signup → paid 15% | Signup → paid 25% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | 17,817 / month | 11,878 / month | 7,127 / month |
| 3% | 11,878 / month | 7,919 / month | 4,751 / month |
| 5% | 7,127 / month | 4,751 / month | 2,851 / month |
What conversion rates should you assume? Benchmarks
| Rate | Benchmark | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial → paid | 8–12% is good; 15–25% is great | Kyle Poyar & Lenny Rachitsky, Lenny’s Newsletter, 2023 |

Common mistakes when planning traffic for revenue
- Using benchmark conversion rates instead of your own. A model built on someone else’s 5% signup rate will be off by exactly as much as your rate differs.
- Forgetting churn. Ignoring 4% monthly churn in the example understates the traffic needed by about 24%.
- Counting all traffic. Bots, your own visits and visitors from countries you can’t sell to don’t convert. Plan on human, relevant visitors only.
- Assuming every channel converts the same. Search visitors with intent and social visitors browsing convert very differently; plan traffic by channel when you can.
- Using list price as ARPA. Discounts, annual-plan savings and cheaper tiers lower the real average revenue per customer.
- Ignoring time to convert. If trials last 14 days and decisions take a month, revenue lags traffic by weeks — start earlier than the model says.
How to get your real funnel numbers from VisitTrack
Every input to this calculator except your price is something VisitTrack measures: human visitors (bots are filtered at ingest), signups, paying customers, revenue, and how long people take to convert.
- Install the script and track signups with
window.visitrack("signup")(custom events). The Signups tab shows signups by source. - Connect your payment provider for revenue attribution. The Revenue tab shows conversions, average order value, revenue per visitor and average time to convert.
- Build a funnel — landing page → pricing → signup — to see each step’s conversion rate and the biggest drop-off.
- Plug your measured visitor → signup and signup → paid rates into the calculator, then re-run it monthly as they change.
Frequently asked questions
How many visitors do I need to make $10,000 MRR?
It depends on price and conversion. At $29 a month, a 3% visitor-to-signup rate and a 15% trial-to-paid rate, you need 345 customers, which takes about 6,400 visitors a month for 12 months with no churn, or about 7,900 a month with 4% monthly churn.
How do I calculate how much traffic I need for a revenue goal?
Divide the revenue goal by your average price to get customers, then divide customers by your overall visitor-to-customer rate (visitor-to-signup × signup-to-paid). Spread that over your timeline and add enough new customers to replace churn.
What is a good visitor-to-signup conversion rate for SaaS?
There’s no single standard for whole-site rates, but Unbounce’s 2024 report puts the median SaaS landing page at 3.8%. Site-wide rates are usually lower than landing-page rates, so measure your own before planning.
What is a good free trial to paid conversion rate?
Kyle Poyar and Lenny Rachitsky’s 2023 benchmarks call 8–12% good and 15–25% great for free trials, and 3–5% good and 6–8% great for self-serve freemium products.
How does churn affect the traffic I need?
Churn means some customers leave before you reach the target, so you need more new customers each month to land on it — about 24% more traffic in the $10k example at 4% monthly churn. After you reach the target, you still need steady traffic to replace churning customers.
Is it better to increase traffic or conversion rate?
Usually conversion first, at small scale. Doubling either the visitor-to-signup or the signup-to-paid rate halves the traffic you need, and conversion improvements keep paying off on every future visitor. Traffic growth is still necessary — but it’s cheaper once each visitor is worth more.
