Analytics for AI startups: humans, bots and AI-assistant traffic, separated

The best analytics for AI startups answers three questions at once: how much of your traffic is real people (AI products attract heavy bot and scraper traffic), how many visitors arrive from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and other assistants, and which of those channels turn into paying users. Generic analytics blends all three into one misleading number.

Updated

AI products live in an unusual traffic environment. Launches spike on X, Product Hunt and Hacker News; a growing share of discovery happens inside AI assistants; and scrapers, headless browsers and AI crawlers hit your site constantly. A visitor count that includes all of that is noise.

VisitTrack classifies every hit as human or bot at ingest and leaves bots out of every number by default (you can still inspect them). Referrals from AI assistants form their own channel. AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are verified by reverse DNS and reported separately — never billed. And credit-pack or subscription payments through Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Paddle are attributed to the channel that brought the user.

The metrics that matter for an AI product

  1. 1.Human visitors vs filtered bots

    Your real top of funnel. AI startups often see a large share of automated traffic; VisitTrack's bot verdict is stored per visit and the dashboard defaults to humans only. See bot filtering.

  2. 2.AI-assistant referrals and their conversion rate

    Visitors from ChatGPT, Perplexity and others tend to arrive with intent. Track the channel's signup and paid rates separately from search.

  3. 3.AI crawler activity per page

    Which pages GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others fetch, and how often. It's an early signal of what assistants may cite. Manage access with the AI crawler robots.txt generator.

  4. 4.Signup → first generation → paid

    The activation funnel. Send first_generation (or your product's equivalent) as a server-side event and funnel it between signup and payment_completed.

  5. 5.Revenue by channel and attribution model

    Launch traffic usually gets first-touch credit; search and AI referrals often close. Compare five attribution models side by side on the Revenue tab.

Questions AI founders ask

How much of our traffic is real?
Compare the default (human) view with the bot view using the traffic filter. The API and MCP tools take the same traffic=human|bot|all parameter.
Is ChatGPT sending us users?
The AI channel in the sources breakdown shows visitors, signups and attributed revenue from chatgpt.com and other assistants.
Which AI crawlers read our docs and landing pages?
The AI crawler card on the Overview, once the backend snippet is installed. See AI crawler tracking.
Do launch-day users ever pay?
Filter by the launch referrer or UTM and follow them through the signup → activation → paid funnel.

How to set up analytics for an AI startup

  1. Install the tag on site and app

    The same tag on the marketing site and the app keeps one visitor id from first visit to first payment.

    <script defer data-site="SITE_ID" src="https://visitrack.app/tracker.js"></script>
  2. Record signups from the server

    Most AI apps sign users in with Google or GitHub. Carry window.visitrack.visitorId() through the OAuth redirect and send signup from the callback with POST /api/track — see custom events.

  3. Send the activation event

    From your generation endpoint, send the first successful generation per user as a server event.

    await fetch("https://visitrack.app/api/track", {
      method: "POST",
      headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.VISITRACK_API_KEY}`, "Content-Type": "application/json" },
      body: JSON.stringify({ type: "event", visitorId, name: "first_generation", props: { model: "default" } }),
    });
  4. Attribute credit packs and subscriptions

    Pass the visitor id into Stripe Checkout (or Polar, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle) and connect the webhook. See Stripe attribution.

    // server: create the Checkout Session with the visitor id
    const session = await stripe.checkout.sessions.create({
      mode: "subscription",
      line_items: [{ price: PRICE_ID, quantity: 1 }],
      client_reference_id: visitorId, // window.visitrack.visitorId() from the browser
      success_url: "https://example.com/welcome",
    });
  5. Add AI crawler tracking

    A few lines in your middleware or server report crawler hits. Next.js, Express, Cloudflare and reverse-proxy recipes are in AI crawler tracking.

Product Hunt (launch week)9,100 visitors, 1,040 signups4% of them bought a credit pack
Signup → first_generation71% within 24 hUsers who don't generate on day one rarely return
Credit-pack revenue$11,860 attributedAI channel: $2,950 from 9% of visitors
AI crawler hits142,000 (not billed)GPTBot and PerplexityBot crawl /templates daily

Illustrative numbers for a typical site of this kind, not real customer data.

The headline traffic number was inflated by 60% bots. Among real visitors, AI-assistant referrals convert at more than twice the average and already produce a quarter of revenue — and the /templates pages they cite are the ones AI crawlers fetch most. That's a content strategy.

What VisitTrack costs for an AI startup

Filtered bots and AI crawler hits are never billed — which matters a lot for AI products.

VisitTrack pricing by traffic profile
ProfileEvents / monthPlanPriceNotes
Pre-launch waitlist~7,000Up to 10k events/mo$5/mo or $50/yrA landing page and a form
Post-launch freemium~210,000Up to 250k events/mo$29/mo or $290/yr~40k human visitors, app tracked
Scaling AI app~1,900,000Up to 2.5M events/mo$89/mo or $890/yrSeveral products and large docs

Every feature is on every plan; the price only follows monthly events (pageviews, custom events and payments, counted across all your sites). Bot and AI-crawler hits and session replays are never billed. Yearly billing is ten months' price for twelve, every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card, and there's a one-time lifetime deal from $59.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

VisitTrack groups referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar assistants into an AI channel automatically. Some assistant clicks arrive without a referrer and count as direct, so add UTM parameters to links you control.

Can I see which AI crawlers visit my site?

Yes, with a small server-side snippet: crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are verified by reverse DNS and shown separately. Crawls are never billed.

Why do my visitor numbers differ from GA4?

Different bot filtering, ad-blocker rates and session definitions. VisitTrack classifies every hit and shows humans by default; automated browsers such as Playwright and Puppeteer are flagged as bots.

Can VisitTrack attribute credit-pack purchases?

Yes, when they go through Stripe Checkout or Payment Links, Polar, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle or Razorpay with the visitor id attached. Usage billed later on invoices isn't attributed automatically.

Can my team query analytics from Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Connect the MCP server at https://visitrack.app/api/mcp and ask questions in chat; with the write scope the assistant can also create goals and funnels.

Do bots count toward my plan?

No. Bot and AI-crawler traffic is never billed.
