Analytics for Shopify stores: traffic, content and funnels without a cookie banner
Updated
Shopify already reports sessions by referrer, conversion rate and sales by UTM campaign. What it doesn't give you is a simple, cookieless view of the storefront journey, blog content performance, rage clicks and heatmaps, AI-assistant referrals, or one dashboard across a store and its separate content site.
An honest limit first: Shopify hosts the checkout, and third-party scripts can't run on its checkout and thank-you pages the way they run on your theme. So VisitTrack sees everything up to the checkout button, and Shopify remains your source of truth for orders. If you want orders inside VisitTrack too, there's a server-side route below.
The metrics a Shopify store should watch outside Shopify
1.Storefront funnel up to checkout
Product page → add to cart → checkout started. These are the steps you control in the theme, and the ones where most shoppers drop.
2.Traffic and checkout starts by channel
Referrers, UTM campaigns and paid click ids (gclid, fbclid, ttclid and others are labeled as paid) next to how many visitors reached checkout.
3.Blog and collection pages that lead to checkout
Shopify's reports focus on sales; VisitTrack's Journeys and landing-page breakdowns show which content starts buying sessions.
4.Friction on product pages
Rage clicks, JavaScript errors from apps and theme code, 404s from old product URLs, and Core Web Vitals per page — all collected automatically.
5.AI and search discovery
Visitors arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants are their own channel, and Search Console keywords show which queries land on which product pages.
Questions Shopify merchants ask
- Why do my numbers differ from Shopify's?
- Every tool defines sessions differently, filters bots differently and is blocked by different ad blockers. Use Shopify for orders and revenue, and VisitTrack for trends, sources and on-site behavior — compare trends, not absolute counts.
- Which theme change hurt conversion?
- Compare the add-to-cart rate before and after the change with the previous-period toggle, then check the Clicks heatmap on the product template.
- Which apps slow my store down?
- Web Vitals per page (LCP, INP, CLS) show which templates got slower;
js_errorevents often name the app script that broke. - Does our TikTok traffic reach checkout?
- Filter by the TikTok source (ttclid is labeled as paid) and look at the funnel's checkout-start step.
How to set up VisitTrack on Shopify
Paste the tag in theme.liquid
Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid, right before
</head>, then Save. Full walkthrough: Shopify integration guide.layout/theme.liquid <script defer data-site="SITE_ID" src="https://visitrack.app/tracker.js"></script>Mark add-to-cart and checkout buttons
Add
data-vt-goalto the theme's buttons — it fires on click with no JavaScript. Then make a funnel:add_to_cart→checkout_started, with/cartas an exact-path step in between if you want it.<button type="submit" name="add" data-vt-goal="add_to_cart">Add to cart</button> <button type="submit" name="checkout" data-vt-goal="checkout_started">Check out</button>Exclude admin browsing
Visit the store once with
?vt_ignore=1from each device you use to manage it, so your own previews don't count.Optional: send orders from an order webhook
Store the visitor id as a cart attribute from the theme (Shopify's Ajax Cart API accepts
attributes), then in your ownorders/createwebhook handler callPOST /api/trackwith that id and apurchaseevent. It joins the funnel and the visitor's journey; it won't appear on the Revenue tab, which only reads payment-provider webhooks. See server events.fetch("/cart/update.js", { method: "POST", headers: { "Content-Type": "application/json" }, body: JSON.stringify({ attributes: { visitrack_visitor_id: window.visitrack?.visitorId?.() } }), });Consider cookieless mode for EU shoppers
Switch the tracking mode to cookieless, or hybrid (cookieless only for EU/EEA, UK and Swiss visitors), in Settings → General. See cookieless mode.
Example: a Shopify home-goods store
About 18,000 monthly visitors, with a blog of care guides.
| Metric | Value | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors | 18,250 | 71% mobile |
| Add to cart | 1,370 (7.5%) | Desktop 11%, mobile 6.2% |
| Checkout started | 640 (3.5%) | Shopify reports 402 orders for the same period |
| Care-guide blog posts | 3,900 visitors | Start 18% of sessions that reach checkout |
| LCP on product template | 3.9 s (p75, mobile) | A review app's widget loads before the hero image |
| AI channel | 420 visitors | Mostly ChatGPT, landing on the care guides |
Illustrative numbers for a typical site of this kind, not real customer data.
The gap between add-to-cart rates on desktop and mobile, plus a slow product template, points to performance rather than pricing. The care guides are quietly the best acquisition channel and are already being cited by AI assistants — worth expanding.
VisitTrack vs Shopify Analytics and GA4 for Shopify
Third-party details as of October 2026.
| VisitTrack | Shopify Analytics | GA4 (via Google & YouTube app) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orders and sales | Not native — optional server events | Authoritative | Purchase events from the app's integration |
| Storefront funnel | Custom events + funnels | Conversion breakdown report | Ecommerce funnel reports |
| Heatmaps / replays | Built in (replays opt-in) | Third-party apps | No |
| Cookie consent in the EU | Cookieless mode available | Shopify's consent tools apply | Consent typically required |
| Content and AI referrals | Landing pages, journeys, AI channel | Referrer reports | Yes, with setup |
For many stores the right answer is "Shopify plus one lightweight tool". VisitTrack is a good fit if you want cookie-free traffic analytics, heatmaps and replays without stacking apps; GA4 is the fit if you run Google Ads bidding on its conversions. See VisitTrack vs Google Analytics.
What VisitTrack costs for a Shopify store
Shopify storefronts average 4–6 pageviews per visit; button goals add a few percent.
| Profile | Events / month | Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small store | ~22,000 | Up to 25k events/mo | $9/mo or $90/yr | ~4k visitors |
| Growing store | ~110,000 | Up to 250k events/mo | $29/mo or $290/yr | ~18k visitors |
| Multi-store brand | ~600,000 | Up to 1M events/mo | $59/mo or $590/yr | Several storefronts on one plan |
Every feature is on every plan; the price only follows monthly events (pageviews, custom events and payments, counted across all your sites). Bot and AI-crawler hits and session replays are never billed. Yearly billing is ten months' price for twelve, every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card, and there's a one-time lifetime deal from $59.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VisitTrack to Shopify?
Paste the script tag before </head> in layout/theme.liquid (Online Store → Themes → Edit code). No Shopify app is needed. Step-by-step: Shopify guide.
Can VisitTrack track Shopify checkout and purchases?
Not directly — Shopify hosts the checkout and doesn't run theme scripts there. VisitTrack tracks up to the checkout button; orders can be sent from your own order webhook as server-side events, but Shopify stays the source of truth for sales.
Is VisitTrack a replacement for Shopify Analytics?
No. Use Shopify's reports for orders, sales and inventory, and VisitTrack for privacy-friendly traffic, content, funnels, heatmaps and replays.
Do I need a cookie banner for analytics on Shopify?
Not for VisitTrack in cookieless mode, which stores nothing in the browser. Other apps and Shopify's own tracking have their own requirements. General information, not legal advice.
Will it slow down my Shopify theme?
The tracker is about 5 KB gzipped and loads with defer, so it never blocks rendering. Replay code loads only when replays are switched on and the visit is sampled.
Can I track several Shopify stores?
Yes. Unlimited sites on every plan; events are counted across all of them.
