What is zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page itself answered the question — or the user refined the query or gave up.
Also called: Zero-click searches, No-click search

How common are zero-click searches?
Zero-click rate = searches with no click ÷ all searches
SparkToro's 2024 study, based on Datos clickstream data, estimated that 58.5% of Google searches in the US and 59.7% in the EU ended without a click, and that only about 360 of every 1,000 US searches produced a click to the open web (a site Google doesn't own, excluding ads). On mobile the zero-click share was much higher. These figures predate the broad rollout of AI Overviews outside the US, which further reduce clicks on informational queries.
What causes zero-click searches?
- Instant answers: weather, calculators, conversions, sports scores.
- Featured snippets and knowledge panels.
- AI Overviews summarizing several sources.
- Local packs and maps for nearby searches.
- Searchers refining the query instead of clicking.
Zero-click search example
"bounce rate formula" is answered by a featured snippet: the searcher reads single-page sessions ÷ total sessions and leaves. A page ranking first may still get the impression, with few clicks. "bounce rate vs engagement rate GA4" is harder to answer in a sentence, and the top results still earn most of the clicks.
How to adapt to zero-click search
- Accept that definitions get answered on the page — and be the cited source anyway, for brand visibility.
- Give people a reason to click: calculators, data, templates, worked examples.
- Target queries with depth or commercial intent.
- Measure visibility (impressions) separately from traffic (clicks), and traffic separately from outcomes.
- Build channels search can't swallow: newsletters, communities, direct.
Tracking the impact with VisitTrack
Zero-click shows up as impressions that hold while clicks and CTR fall. VisitTrack's Search Console tab shows clicks, impressions, CTR and position per query and page, and the rest of the dashboard shows whether the clicks you do get turn into sign-ups and revenue — often the remaining clicks are more qualified. Our free tools, like the conversion rate calculator, are the kind of click-worthy asset that survives zero-click results.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of Google searches are zero-click?
SparkToro's 2024 study estimated about 58.5% of US and 59.7% of EU Google searches ended without a click. AI Overviews have likely pushed the share higher for informational queries since then.
Are zero-click searches bad for SEO?
They reduce clicks for simple informational queries, but being the cited answer still builds brand visibility. The response is to target queries that need more than a one-line answer and to give visitors a reason to click.
