What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and assistants can use it as the direct answer to a question — in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI-generated answers.

How AEO works

Answer engines look for a passage that answers the query on its own. AEO makes that passage easy to find and lift: the question as a heading, a concise answer immediately below it (often 40–60 words, or a short list or table), then supporting detail. The same pattern serves Google's featured snippets, Alexa or Siri reading an answer aloud, and generative engines composing a response.

AEO tactics

  • Phrase headings like real questions ("How is churn rate calculated?").
  • Answer in the first sentence; elaborate after.
  • Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons.
  • Add FAQ sections with standalone answers — each should make sense without the rest of the page.
  • Keep facts current and dated ("as of October 2026").
  • Mark up the page with relevant structured data.

AEO example

## What is bounce rate?
Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions in which a visitor viewed only one page and left.

That heading-plus-definition pair is the pattern this glossary uses on every page. It's exactly the shape a featured snippet or AI answer extracts, and a reader in a hurry gets what they came for in one line.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO

SEO gets a page ranked; AEO makes a passage on it the answer; GEO extends the same idea to AI engines that blend several sources and cite them. In practice they're one discipline with different emphasis, and the trade-off is the same: answers on the results page can reduce clicks (zero-click search), so the content after the answer has to earn the visit.

Measuring AEO with VisitTrack

Use the Search Console tab to see impressions and CTR for question queries, AI crawler tracking to see when answer bots like ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User fetch a page, and the AI channel in referrers to see who clicks through from an answer — then goals and revenue to see whether those visitors convert.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an answer be for a featured snippet?

Short. A direct answer of roughly 40 to 60 words, or a compact list or table, is a common target, followed by the detail that supports it.

Does FAQ schema still help AEO?

Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023, so most sites no longer get the visual enhancement. Well-written FAQ content still helps answer engines find standalone answers.
