What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows above the regular results for some queries, combining information from several web pages and linking to sources.
They grew out of the Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment from 2023 and launched broadly in the US in May 2024, then expanded to many more countries and languages. Google's separate AI Mode offers a fully conversational search experience.

How AI Overviews choose sources
Overviews are generated from Google's own index, so a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be used — there's no separate submission or special markup. Google describes using a "query fan-out" approach for some answers, running related searches to gather supporting pages. Links appear inline and in a source panel. Standard SEO controls apply: nosnippet and max-snippet limit what can be shown.
How AI Overviews affect traffic
When an Overview answers the question, fewer people click any result. A Pew Research Center study of browsing data from March 2025 found users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits to a results page with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. Pages cited inside the Overview can still earn clicks — but informational queries are hit hardest, and branded or transactional queries much less.
AI Overviews example
Your "what is churn rate" page held position 2 and averaged 1,800 clicks a month. After an AI Overview started appearing for the query, Search Console shows impressions roughly flat but clicks down to 1,100. The page is still cited in the Overview. The visitors who do click convert to trials at a higher rate than before — the ones who wanted only the definition got it on Google.
How to respond
- Give the definition plainly (that's what gets cited) and put the reason to click — calculators, examples, data, tools — right after it.
- Shift effort toward queries with intent beyond a definition: comparisons, how-tos, pricing, alternatives.
- Measure outcomes per visitor, not just clicks.
Measuring AI Overview impact with VisitTrack
Search Console includes AI Overview appearances within regular Web results, so watch for pages whose impressions hold while CTR drops. VisitTrack's Search Console tab shows that per query and page, next to the visitors, goals and revenue those pages produce. For the wider AI picture, AI crawler tracking shows which AI bots read each page, and visits from AI assistants are classified as their own channel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?
Not separately from Google Search. You can limit what's shown with nosnippet or max-snippet directives, which also affect regular snippets. The Google-Extended token controls Gemini training use, not AI Overviews in Search.
Do AI Overviews show in Search Console?
Yes, as part of the Web search performance data. An AI Overview's links share a single position, and there's no separate filter for AI Overview traffic.
