Analytics for directories: prove the clicks you send every listing
Updated
Directories — tool lists, startup directories, local guides, "awesome" lists — make money by sending traffic elsewhere: paid listings, featured spots, sponsorships, affiliate links. The proof listed companies want is "how many visitors did you send me?", and a directory that can answer with real numbers can charge for it.
VisitTrack records every click to another domain automatically as an outbound click, lists them by destination in the Outbound tab, and puts Google Search Console data next to every page. If you sell listings through Stripe Payment Links, Lemon Squeezy or Polar, each sale is attributed to the channel that brought the submitter.
The directory metrics that matter
1.Outbound clicks per listing
The value you deliver to each listed company, and the basis for pricing featured spots. The Outbound tab breaks clicks down by destination.
2.Click-through rate per category page
Outbound clicks divided by category pageviews. Categories with traffic but few clicks have weak listings or poor sorting.
3.Search traffic per category and listing
Search Console clicks and positions for each page. Directories live on long-tail search; this is the roadmap for new categories.
4.Submission funnel
Submit page → form submit → payment.
form_submitis recorded automatically;payment_completedcomes from the billing webhook.5.Paid-listing revenue by channel
Where paying submitters come from — often a different set of channels than where browsing visitors come from.
Questions directory owners ask
- How many clicks did we send this sponsor last month?
- The Outbound tab lists clicks per destination link over the last 30 days, with each link's trend. Read it at month end for a monthly sponsor report.
- Which categories should we expand?
- Categories with high Search Console impressions and low positions are worth more listings and better copy.
- Where do paying submitters come from?
- The Revenue tab shows the first-touch referrer, campaign and landing page of each paid submission.
- Are bots inflating our listing views?
- Directories are scraped heavily. Bots are filtered at ingest and the dashboard shows humans by default.
How to set up directory analytics with VisitTrack
Install the tag
One tag in the shared layout covers every listing page.
<script defer data-site="SITE_ID" src="https://visitrack.app/tracker.js"></script>Let outbound clicks track themselves
Every click to another domain is recorded as
outbound_clickautomatically, including new listings — nothing to add per link.Sell listings with attribution
With Stripe Payment Links, append the visitor id as
client_reference_idon the page that links to checkout; Lemon Squeezy and Polar take it in custom data. See Stripe attribution.document.querySelectorAll('a[href^="https://buy.stripe.com/"]').forEach((a) => { const id = window.visitrack?.visitorId?.(); if (!id) return; const url = new URL(a.href); url.searchParams.set("client_reference_id", id); a.href = url.toString(); });Connect Search Console
Pages & Search shows queries, clicks, impressions and position per listing and category page.
Publish proof for advertisers
Embed the visitors-trend card or the live-visitors badge on your "advertise" page, or share the public dashboard — note it shows the whole dashboard, revenue included.
Example: a SaaS tools directory
About 2,300 listings, 52,000 monthly visitors, paid featured spots and $49 fast-track submissions.
| Metric | Value | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors | 52,400 | 71% from Google organic |
| Outbound clicks | 18,900 | 36 clicks per 100 visitors |
| Top featured listing | 1,240 clicks | Renewal pitch: $0.04 per click at the current price |
| "AI writing tools" category | 9,800 views, 4.1% CTR | Lowest CTR — listings sorted by date, not quality |
| Fast-track submissions | 38 × $49 = $1,862 | 29 came from a single newsletter mention |
| Bot hits filtered | 210,000 | Scrapers copying listings — none billed |
Illustrative numbers for a typical site of this kind, not real customer data.
Two easy wins: re-sort the weakest category, and sponsor that newsletter again since it produced most paid submissions. The featured-listing click report is the sales deck for next month's renewals.

What VisitTrack costs for a directory
Directory visitors browse several pages; outbound clicks count as events.
| Profile | Events / month | Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New niche directory | ~22,000 | Up to 25k events/mo | $9/mo or $90/yr | ~6k visitors |
| Established directory | ~230,000 | Up to 250k events/mo | $29/mo or $290/yr | ~50k visitors |
| Large directory network | ~1,600,000 | Up to 2.5M events/mo | $89/mo or $890/yr | Several directories, one plan |
Every feature is on every plan; the price only follows monthly events (pageviews, custom events and payments, counted across all your sites). Bot and AI-crawler hits and session replays are never billed. Yearly billing is ten months' price for twelve, every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card, and there's a one-time lifetime deal from $59.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track outbound clicks on a directory site?
With VisitTrack you don't add anything: every click to another domain is recorded as an outbound click and listed by destination in the Outbound tab.
Can I show listed companies how many clicks I sent them?
Yes. The Outbound tab lists clicks per destination link over the last 30 days, with a trend per link, so a month-end check gives each listed company its number. For a featured listing you want reported on any date range, add data-vt-goal to its link and it becomes a goal.
How do I attribute paid listing submissions?
Sell through Stripe Payment Links, Checkout, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, Paddle or Razorpay and pass the visitor id. Each payment then shows the referrer and campaign of the submitter's first visit.
Does VisitTrack filter scrapers?
Yes. Every hit is classified as human or bot at ingest; bots are left out of every number by default and never billed.
Can I use a public dashboard as social proof?
Yes, though it exposes the whole dashboard including revenue. For traffic-only proof, embed widgets such as the visitors-trend card or live badge.
