Hotjar alternatives

9 best Hotjar alternatives (2026): heatmaps and session replay compared

The best Hotjar alternatives in 2026 are Microsoft Clarity (free heatmaps and recordings), Mouseflow (the deepest CRO toolkit, with a cookieless option), FullStory (best-in-class replay), Lucky Orange (all features on every plan, plus live chat) and Crazy Egg (heatmaps with built-in A/B testing). People are looking because Hotjar is now sold as Contentsquare plans: heatmaps and surveys are billed separately, replays are sampled above set volumes, and data collection stops at the monthly cap.

Why people look for Hotjar alternatives

Hotjar is now Contentsquare

Contentsquare acquired Hotjar in 2021, and in 2026 the standalone Hotjar plans (Basic, Plus, Business, Scale) were replaced by Contentsquare plans — hotjar.com/pricing now redirects to Contentsquare's pricing page. Existing customers are being migrated through 2026, and many teams are using the moment to re-evaluate.

Heatmaps and surveys are separate bills

As of October 2026 heatmaps and replays sit in Contentsquare's Experience Analytics (Growth from $49/month for 7K sessions), while surveys and feedback are a separate Voice of Customer plan (Growth from $99/month). Teams that used Hotjar for both now pay for two products.

Sampled replays and a hard cap

On the free plan, replay capture is sampled at 5% of sessions (up to 10K replays). On Growth, replays are captured fully up to 20K sessions a month and sampled at 15% beyond that. When you hit the monthly session allowance, new heatmap and funnel data stops until the next reset — so a traffic spike can leave a gap exactly when you want data.

Short replay retention

Growth keeps analytics data for 13 months but replays for only 2 months, which is short for comparing a redesign with last quarter.

Cookies and consent

Hotjar sets first-party cookies (the user cookie lasts a year). It offers a mode that uses sessionStorage instead, but most setups still treat it as an analytics tool that needs consent in the EU.

How we picked these Hotjar alternatives

We’re VisitTrack, so we’re one of the options below — and we list our own drawbacks the same way we list everyone else’s. Prices and plan limits come from each vendor’s public pricing page and documentation as of October 2026; where a vendor doesn’t publish a number, we say so instead of guessing. We weighed:

  1. Heatmap types. Click, scroll and move maps at minimum — Hotjar's core — plus extras like attention or form analytics.
  2. Replay coverage. Whether every session is recorded or only a sample, and how long recordings are kept.
  3. What happens at the limit. Overage, sampling, or tracking simply stopping.
  4. Feedback tools. Surveys and feedback widgets, since many Hotjar users rely on them.
  5. Privacy and consent. Masking defaults, cookie use and cookieless options for EU traffic.
  6. Price per 10K sessions. Compared on monthly billing at the same volume.

The 9 best Hotjar alternatives in 2026

1.Microsoft Clarity

clarity.microsoft.com

Microsoft's free session-recording and heatmap tool, with rage-click and dead-click detection, AI session summaries and a basic traffic dashboard.

Best for: Anyone who used Hotjar's free plan for heatmaps and recordings.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: Clarity is free with no traffic limits and covers the core of Hotjar: session recordings, click and scroll heatmaps, rage and dead clicks, plus AI summaries. It has no surveys or feedback widgets, keeps most data for 30 days, and Microsoft has access to the data. See VisitTrack vs Microsoft Clarity.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free, with no paid tiers: unlimited sites and team members, recordings up to 100,000 sessions per project per day, heatmaps up to 100,000 pageviews each. Data is available for 30 days; favorited recordings and a sample are kept up to 9 months.

Key features

  • Session recordings and click/scroll heatmaps
  • Rage clicks, dead clicks and quick-backs
  • Copilot summaries and chat
  • Referrer, channel and UTM dashboard

Pros

  • Completely free at high volume
  • Fast to set up; good AI summaries
  • Frustration signals out of the box

Cons

  • 30-day retention for most data
  • Microsoft accesses the data; ad-related cookies when ad_storage consent is granted
  • Consent enforced for EEA, UK and Swiss visitors since October 31, 2025 — without it, sessions fragment

2.Mouseflow

mouseflow.com

A conversion-optimization tool with session replay, six heatmap types, funnels, form analytics, friction scoring and feedback surveys.

Best for: CRO specialists who want Hotjar's features plus form analytics and friction scoring.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: Mouseflow is the most feature-for-feature Hotjar replacement: recordings, six heatmap types (click, scroll, movement, attention, geo, friction), funnels, form analytics and NPS surveys in one plan, with a cookieless option and unlimited users. Session quotas are smaller than Contentsquare's for the money.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free: 500 sessions/month. Essential $39/month (5,000 sessions), Advanced $149 (25,000), Premium $399 (100,000), billed monthly (Essential is $25/month billed yearly). Tracking stops when sessions run out; 14-day trial.

Key features

  • Click, scroll, movement, attention, geo and friction heatmaps
  • Session replay and funnels
  • Form analytics
  • NPS and feedback surveys

Pros

  • The most complete CRO feature set here
  • Cookieless option
  • Unlimited users on every plan

Cons

  • Small session quotas for the price
  • Tracking stops at the cap
  • Lower tiers limited to 1 site and 1 funnel

3.Lucky Orange

www.luckyorange.com

A conversion toolkit for small online stores and marketing sites: session recordings, dynamic heatmaps, funnels, form analytics, surveys and live chat.

Best for: Small online stores that want heatmaps, recordings, surveys and live chat in one bill.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: Lucky Orange puts every feature on every plan — dynamic heatmaps, recordings, funnels, form analytics, surveys and live chat — so you don't pay separately for feedback the way Contentsquare now splits it. It integrates closely with Shopify.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Build $39/month (3,500 sessions), Expand $249/month (50,000+), Scale $1,049/month (300,000+) on monthly billing; Grow is $72/month billed yearly (10,000 sessions). Every feature on every plan; 60 days of storage by default; 7-day trial.

Key features

  • Dynamic heatmaps and session recordings
  • Funnels and form analytics
  • Surveys and announcements
  • Live chat and live visitor view

Pros

  • All features on every plan
  • Live chat bundled in
  • Strong Shopify integration

Cons

  • No free plan outside Shopify
  • 60-day default retention
  • Price jumps sharply above 10K sessions

A digital experience analytics platform built around high-fidelity session replay and autocapture, with frustration signals, funnels and dashboards.

Best for: Product and UX research teams at larger companies.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: FullStory's replay is higher fidelity than Hotjar's and it autocaptures every interaction for retroactive analysis, with frustration signals and funnels. The free plan includes 30,000 sessions a month; paid plans are quoted.

Pricing (as of October 2026): FullstoryFree: 30,000 sessions/month, 12 months of data, up to 10 users. Business, Advanced and Enterprise are quoted by sales; surveys, mobile and AI are add-ons.

Key features

  • Autocapture with retroactive analysis
  • High-fidelity session replay
  • Rage/dead-click and error signals
  • Funnels, dashboards, warehouse export

Pros

  • Best-in-class replay and UX diagnosis
  • Generous free plan
  • Sensitive data excluded by default

Cons

  • No public pricing for paid plans
  • Enterprise-oriented and complex
  • Not a marketing-attribution tool

5.Crazy Egg

www.crazyegg.com

A marketer-friendly heatmap and A/B testing tool, with scroll and "confetti" maps, recordings, surveys and simple web analytics.

Best for: Marketers who want heatmaps and A/B tests without a developer.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: Crazy Egg's scroll, click and confetti maps are as approachable as Hotjar's, and its Plus plan adds A/B testing — something Hotjar never offered. Recording quotas are low and billing is annual only.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free "Instant Heatmaps" (last 30 days, up to 1,000 sessions/day sampled). Paid plans are billed yearly: Starter $29/month (5,000 tracked pageviews, 50 recordings), Plus $99 (150,000 pageviews, 1,000 recordings, A/B testing), Pro $249, Enterprise $599. 30-day trial.

Key features

  • Click, scroll, confetti and overlay heatmaps
  • Session recordings
  • A/B testing and CTAs (Plus and up)

Cons

  • Very few recordings on entry plans
  • Annual billing only
  • Pageview quotas get expensive on busy sites

6.PostHog

posthog.com

An open-source product platform that bundles product analytics, web analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse.

Best for: Product teams that want replay and heatmaps next to product analytics and feature flags.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: PostHog includes session replay (5K recordings free a month), heatmaps, surveys and product analytics in one open-source platform, so you can jump from a funnel drop-off to the recordings behind it.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Usage-based per product with a free tier that resets monthly: 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 1,500 survey responses and 1M warehouse rows. Events then cost $0.00005 each (1–2M), falling to $0.000009 above 250M. Optional Boost ($250/month) and Scale ($750/month) bundles add SSO, white-labeling and priority support.

Key features

  • Product analytics: funnels, retention, paths, cohorts, SQL
  • Web analytics dashboard and session replay with heatmaps
  • Feature flags, A/B tests and surveys
  • Revenue analytics from Stripe data, EU Cloud in Frankfurt

Pros

  • Huge, transparent free tier
  • Replaces several tools with one SDK
  • Real cookieless mode and an EU region

Cons

  • Bills grow as you stack products, and autocapture inflates events
  • Dense interface built for engineering-led teams
  • Self-hosting is hobby-grade only

7.VisitTrack

visitrack.app

Privacy-first web analytics with revenue attribution built in: traffic, journeys, funnels and goals, plus every payment from your billing provider credited to the channel, campaign and page that brought the customer.

Best for: SaaS founders who want to watch sessions and know which channel those visitors (and their payments) came from.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: VisitTrack's opt-in session replays and click heatmaps live next to traffic sources, journeys, funnels and Stripe/Paddle revenue, so a replay comes with the campaign that sent the visitor. Recordings are sampled per session (you choose 1–100%) and every form field is masked. It has no surveys and no scroll or move heatmaps — only a per-page scroll-depth metric — so it's not a full Hotjar replacement for CRO teams. See VisitTrack vs Hotjar.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Priced by monthly events (pageviews + custom events; bots are never billed), every feature on every plan: $5/month for 10k events, $19 for 100k, $59 for 1M, up to $179 for 10M. Yearly billing gives two months free. 14-day free trial, no card required; no free plan. A lifetime deal starts at $59 one-time.

Key features

  • Revenue by referrer, UTM campaign and landing page, refunds subtracted
  • Live visitors and 3D globe, journeys, funnels, goals, custom events
  • Google Search Console keywords and AI crawler tracking (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot)
  • Session replays (opt-in, sampled) and click heatmaps
  • REST API, CLI and an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor

Pros

  • Answers "which channel brought paying customers" without a data warehouse
  • All features on the cheapest plan — you only pay for volume
  • Bots and AI crawlers filtered at ingest and never billed

Cons

  • Newer product with a smaller community than Plausible, Matomo or GA
  • Hosted only: no self-hosted or open-source edition
  • No permanent free plan, and the default mode uses a first-party id — cookieless mode shortens returning-visitor history to a day

8.LogRocket

logrocket.com

Session replay for engineering and product teams, with console logs, network requests and JavaScript errors attached to each recording.

Best for: Engineering teams that used Hotjar recordings to reproduce bugs.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: LogRocket attaches console logs, network requests and JavaScript errors to each replay, which is far more useful than Hotjar for debugging. It's priced for product and engineering budgets ($83/month for 10K sessions on Core).

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free: 1K sessions/month. Core: $83/month for 10K sessions, $176 for 25K, $333 for 50K, $717 for 100K (monthly billing). Pro adds Galileo AI. Final price depends on seats, retention and add-ons; 14-day trial.

Key features

  • Replay with console, network and error context
  • Click, scroll and rage-click maps
  • Funnels, paths and surveys
  • Alerting, issue triage and an MCP/API

Pros

  • Best for debugging front-end issues
  • Unlimited analytics and error events
  • Transparent session-based prices

Cons

  • Expensive at high session volumes
  • Small free plan
  • Weak on marketing and traffic-source analytics

9.Mixpanel

mixpanel.com

An event-based product analytics platform for funnels, flows, retention and cohorts, now with session replay, heatmaps, feature flags and experiments in the same product.

Best for: Teams already using Mixpanel who want replays without another vendor.

Why it’s a Hotjar alternative: Mixpanel now includes session replay and heatmaps on all plans (10K replays a month free), tied to its funnels and cohorts. It's an analytics tool first, without Hotjar's surveys.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free up to 1M events/month with unlimited seats and 10K session replays. Growth keeps the first 1M events free, then $0.28 per 1K events up to 20M/month; add-ons (Group Analytics, Data Pipelines) are percentage surcharges. Enterprise is quoted (MTU pricing from $20,000/year per Mixpanel's docs). First year free for eligible startups.

Key features

  • Insights, Funnels, Flows, Retention and saved cohorts
  • Session replay with heatmaps (all plans since July 2025)
  • Feature flags and experiments
  • EU and India data residency

Pros

  • Fast, mature event analysis that non-analysts can learn
  • Generous free tier with unlimited seats
  • Replay, flags and experiments now in one tool

Cons

  • Revenue analysis needs a warehouse connector or your own Stripe pipeline
  • Per-event costs climb quickly past 1M events, plus add-on surcharges
  • Requires a tracking plan; weak as a marketing-site traffic dashboard

Hotjar alternatives compared side by side

“Cookieless” means the tool can measure without storing an identifier on the visitor’s device; “revenue attribution” means payments from a billing provider are tied back to the traffic source automatically, not typed in as a goal value. “Partly” is explained in the cell.

How to switch from Hotjar

  1. Export anything you want to keep: survey responses and feedback (CSV) and any recordings you bookmarked — recordings generally can't be imported into another tool.
  2. Pick replacements per job: a heatmap/replay tool, and separately a survey tool if you relied on Hotjar's surveys.
  3. Install the new snippet alongside Hotjar for a week and check masking settings on checkout, account and form pages before you rely on it.
  4. Recreate your key funnels and heatmap pages, and set sampling so your highest-value pages are always recorded.
  5. Remove the Hotjar script, update your cookie banner categories and privacy policy, and confirm no _hj cookies are still being set (our cookie banner checker shows what a page sets).

Our verdict

For most small teams, Microsoft Clarity replaces Hotjar's heatmaps and recordings for free; the trade-offs are 30-day retention, Microsoft's data access and EU consent enforcement. If you need a paid, full CRO toolkit, Mouseflow is the closest match to classic Hotjar and Lucky Orange the simplest all-in-one bill.

If what you really want from recordings is to understand which visitors convert and pay, VisitTrack puts replays next to sources and revenue — just know it doesn't do surveys.

Hotjar alternatives: FAQ

Is Hotjar still available in 2026?

Yes, but as Contentsquare. Since 2026, Hotjar's heatmaps and recordings are sold as Contentsquare Experience Analytics plans and its surveys as Voice of Customer plans; hotjar.com/pricing redirects to Contentsquare's pricing page as of October 2026.

What is the best free alternative to Hotjar?

Microsoft Clarity is the best free Hotjar alternative: it's free with no traffic limits and includes session recordings, click and scroll heatmaps and rage-click detection. It doesn't offer surveys, and most data is kept for 30 days.

How much does Hotjar cost now?

As of October 2026, Contentsquare's Experience Analytics (heatmaps and replays) has a free plan with 200K sessions and sampled replays, and Growth plans from $49/month for 7K sessions. Surveys are a separate Voice of Customer plan from $99/month. Pro and Enterprise are quoted.

Which Hotjar alternative has surveys?

Mouseflow (NPS and feedback), Lucky Orange (surveys and announcements), Crazy Egg (surveys) and PostHog (surveys) all include feedback tools. Microsoft Clarity and VisitTrack don't offer surveys.

Is there a cookieless Hotjar alternative?

Mouseflow has a "disable cookies" option, and VisitTrack's replays store nothing in the visitor's browser. Microsoft Clarity runs cookieless when consent is declined, but with fragmented sessions. Contentsquare itself offers a sessionStorage mode. Whether consent is needed still depends on your setup — this isn't legal advice.

Does Microsoft Clarity replace Hotjar?

For heatmaps and session recordings, mostly yes — and for free. Clarity lacks Hotjar's surveys and feedback widgets, keeps most data for only 30 days, and requires consent for EEA, UK and Swiss visitors since October 31, 2025.

What happened to Smartlook?

Smartlook, another popular Hotjar alternative, stopped selling new plans on May 31, 2026; its owner Cisco/Splunk plans to decommission it and delete data on September 30, 2027. That's why it isn't on this list.
