Heap vs Mixpanel: which should you use in 2026?
Updated
Key takeaways: Heap vs Mixpanel
Pick Heap if…
- You don't have engineering time for a tracking plan and want to define events after the fact from autocaptured clicks and pageviews.
- You're already a Contentsquare customer, or want Heap's analytics alongside Contentsquare's experience analytics.
- Your traffic is modest — Heap's free plan covers up to 10K sessions a month with 6 months of history.
Pick Mixpanel if…
- You want published, predictable pricing (first 1M events free on Growth, then a per-event rate).
- Product managers need fast funnels, flows and retention with a large free allowance.
- You want session replay included in free and self-serve plans rather than as an add-on on upper tiers.
- You want to analyze data that already lives in Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift.

Heap vs Mixpanel for privacy and GDPR
Both tools use identifiers stored in the browser (cookies by default) to follow users over time, so in the EU they generally need consent. Both offer US and EU data residency and a DPA.
Autocapture raises one extra question with Heap: because it records interactions broadly, it can pick up text you didn't intend to collect. Heap provides disableTextCapture and the data-heap-redact-text attribute for redaction, plus stopTracking()/startTracking() for consent flows. Mixpanel's equivalents are opt_out_tracking_by_default, opt_in_tracking() and IP geolocation controls. Neither documents a fully cookieless mode, as of October 2026.
Heap vs Mixpanel pricing at three traffic levels
Heap and Mixpanel meter different things, so a straight comparison isn't possible: Heap prices by sessions and only shows Growth prices after you install its snippet, while Mixpanel prices by events. What's public as of October 2026:
| Monthly traffic | Small (≤10K sessions or ≤1M events) | Mid (≈ 5M events) | Large (≈ 10M events) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heap | Small (≤10K sessions or ≤1M events): $0 — free plan up to 10K sessions/mo | Mid (≈ 5M events): Not published (Growth price shown after install) | Large (≈ 10M events): Not published (Pro/Premier are custom) |
| Mixpanel | Small (≤10K sessions or ≤1M events): $0 — free plan up to 1M events/mo | Mid (≈ 5M events): Up to ≈ $1,120 at list rate | Large (≈ 10M events): Up to ≈ $2,520 at list rate |
Mixpanel figures apply its documented $0.00028/event list rate above the free 1M; prepaid volume gets lower rates. Heap doesn't publish per-session prices; going over a plan limit doesn't drop data but you must upgrade to view it.
Heap vs Mixpanel: setup and day-to-day use
Heap's pitch is minimal setup: install one snippet and it captures pageviews, clicks, form submissions and changes. Later, analysts define "virtual events" (for example, "clicked Upgrade button") and Heap applies them retroactively to all historical data. That's powerful when you forgot to track something — but over time the event dictionary needs governance or it becomes hard to trust.
Mixpanel works best with a deliberate tracking plan: engineers send named events with properties (plan, price, feature), which makes reports precise and fast. Mixpanel also offers autocapture, so the gap has narrowed, but Heap's retroactive definitions remain its defining feature.
Who each one is for
Heap fits teams without dedicated analytics engineering, and companies standardizing on Contentsquare's experience analytics suite. Mixpanel fits product-led companies that want self-serve analytics with transparent pricing and a large free tier.
One consideration for Heap buyers: Contentsquare says Heap's capabilities are now integrated into its Product Analytics and that existing Heap plans still work as usual. No end-of-life date has been announced, but it's reasonable to ask your account team about the roadmap before signing a multi-year deal.
Moving from Heap to Mixpanel
The usual route out of Heap is Heap Connect (syncing raw data to S3, Redshift, BigQuery or Snowflake) or a one-time export requested from Heap support; chart-level CSV exports aren't enough. From the warehouse, Mixpanel's warehouse connectors or Import API can load the history. Expect to translate Heap's virtual events into explicit tracked events going forward.
Heap vs Mixpanel: frequently asked questions
Is Heap still available after the Contentsquare acquisition?
Yes. Contentsquare completed its acquisition of Heap in December 2023 and says existing Heap tools, plans and accounts still work as usual, with Heap's capabilities integrated into Contentsquare's Product Analytics.
What is the main difference between Heap and Mixpanel?
Heap captures interactions automatically and lets you define events retroactively, while Mixpanel is built around events you deliberately track. Heap prices by sessions; Mixpanel prices by events.
Does Heap have a free plan?
Yes. Heap's free plan covers up to 10,000 sessions a month with 6 months of data history and core charts. Mixpanel's free plan covers 1M events a month.
Is Heap more expensive than Mixpanel?
It's hard to say from public data, because Heap doesn't publish paid prices — Growth is shown after install and Pro/Premier are custom. Mixpanel publishes a $0.00028/event list rate above 1M free events, with volume discounts.
Does Heap include session replay?
Session replay and heatmaps are add-ons on Heap's Pro and Premier plans, not included on Free or Growth. Mixpanel includes 10K session replays a month on its free plan.
Can I move my historical Heap data to Mixpanel?
Yes, via a warehouse. Sync raw data with Heap Connect (or request an export from Heap support), then load it into Mixpanel with its warehouse connectors or Import API.
