Key takeaways: Mixpanel vs Amplitude

Pick Mixpanel if…

  • Speed to insight matters more than breadth — Mixpanel's Insights, Funnels, Flows and Retention are quick to learn.
  • You want more free session replays (10K/mo) alongside your 1M free events.
  • Your data lives in a warehouse and you want to query it through Mixpanel's free warehouse connectors.
  • You're an early-stage startup that qualifies for Mixpanel's first-year-free program.

Pick Amplitude if…

  • You want more free events — 2M a month on Amplitude's free plan versus 1M on Mixpanel.
  • You want published self-serve prices: Plus is about $94/mo at 3M events and $720/mo at 10M on monthly billing.
  • You need experimentation, in-product guides and surveys, and activation/CDP features from one vendor.
  • Your company already uses Amplitude's behavioral cohorts for marketing audiences.

Mixpanel vs Amplitude for privacy and GDPR

Neither is a cookieless analytics tool: both are designed to follow identified users across sessions, both set a first-party identifier cookie by default, and in the EU that generally means asking for consent before tracking. Both offer a DPA, SOC 2 reports and deletion APIs for data-subject requests.

Amplitude's Browser SDK 2 lets you choose where the identity is stored — cookie (default, 365 days), localStorage, sessionStorage or none — and trackingOptions can drop IP address, language and platform capture. Mixpanel can switch to localStorage, start opted out (opt_out_tracking_by_default) and disable IP-based geolocation.

For EU data location, Amplitude includes its EU data center on every plan. Mixpanel offers EU residency too, but you must choose it when creating the project — Mixpanel says it can't migrate an existing project to another region.

Mixpanel vs Amplitude pricing at three traffic levels

Amplitude publishes calculator prices for its Plus plan; Mixpanel publishes a list overage rate and discounts prepaid volume. Here's what that means at three volumes, monthly billing, as of October 2026.

Mixpanel vs Amplitude monthly price by traffic level, as of October 2026
Mixpanel1M events/mo: $0 (free tier)5M events/mo: Up to ≈ $1,120 at list rate10M events/mo: Up to ≈ $2,520 at list rate
Amplitude1M events/mo: $0 (free tier)5M events/mo: ≈ $281 (Plus)10M events/mo: ≈ $720 (Plus)

Mixpanel figures apply its documented $0.00028/event list rate above the free 1M; Mixpanel says prepaid volumes get lower rates, so expect a quote below these ceilings. Amplitude figures come from the calculator on its pricing page (annual billing is cheaper — $6,912/yr at 10M). Both sell custom-priced Growth/Enterprise tiers above this.

Is Mixpanel or Amplitude easier to set up?

Installation is similar: a browser SDK or snippet, mobile SDKs, server libraries, or a CDP like Segment feeding both. Both now offer autocapture — Amplitude captures page views, sessions, form interactions and file downloads by default — so you get data before writing a tracking plan.

The difference is in day-two use. Mixpanel's reports are fewer and more direct, so most teams are self-sufficient within a week. Amplitude is a bigger platform — behavioral cohorts, experimentation, guides and surveys, activation — and teams commonly describe a steeper learning curve, often with someone owning the taxonomy and governance.

Who each one is for

Mixpanel suits product-led startups and mid-size SaaS teams where PMs, designers and founders want to answer funnel and retention questions themselves, quickly.

Amplitude suits larger product organizations — and growth teams that want analytics, experimentation and audience activation in one contract. Its free plan's 2M events also makes it attractive for early-stage teams that want room to grow before paying.

Moving from Mixpanel to Amplitude (or back)

Amplitude has a one-click Mixpanel import that pulls historical events through Mixpanel's Export API, roughly 160K events per batch; it doesn't import user profiles, which you'd send separately. Mixpanel publishes migration guides from Amplitude using its Import API or warehouse connectors.

Either way, events migrate more easily than meaning: rebuild your key dashboards, cohorts and funnels by hand, and run both tools in parallel for a few weeks to reconcile counts before cutting over.

Mixpanel vs Amplitude: frequently asked questions

Is Amplitude free?

Yes, Amplitude has a free plan with 2M events a month, 10K session replays, one active experiment and unlimited seats. Its Plus plan also starts free and is priced by volume above 2M events.

Which is cheaper, Mixpanel or Amplitude?

At published self-serve prices, Amplitude Plus is usually cheaper at 5–10M events (about $720/mo at 10M on monthly billing). Mixpanel's list overage rate of $0.00028/event implies a higher ceiling, but it discounts prepaid volume, so compare real quotes.

Does Mixpanel or Amplitude offer EU data hosting?

Both do. Amplitude's EU data center is available on all plans; Mixpanel's EU residency must be chosen when a project is created and can't be changed later.

Can I self-host Mixpanel or Amplitude?

No. Both are proprietary SaaS. If you need self-hosted product analytics, PostHog is the common open-source option — see PostHog vs Mixpanel.

Can I import Mixpanel data into Amplitude?

Yes. Amplitude's Mixpanel import tool copies historical events via Mixpanel's Export API in batches of about 160K events, but not user profiles.

Is Mixpanel or Amplitude better for marketing analytics?

Amplitude leans further into marketing with web analytics dashboards, audience activation and CDP features. Mixpanel also has web analytics reports, but both are primarily product analytics tools; for campaign and channel reporting many teams pair them with a web analytics tool.
