What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping a website's content and technical setup so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Copilot — retrieve it, cite it and mention it in their generated answers.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal et al., published at KDD 2024), which measured how content changes affected visibility in generative answers.
Also called: GEO, AI search optimization, LLM optimization

What helps content get cited by AI engines?
- Answer first. Put a direct, quotable answer in the first sentence or two under a heading phrased like the question.
- Specifics. The GEO paper found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources measurably increased visibility in generated answers — by up to roughly 40% in its benchmark.
- Structure. Clear H2/H3s, tables and lists make passages easy to extract.
- Crawlability. Answer bots must be allowed in robots.txt and the content must be in the HTML, not rendered only by JavaScript.
- Entity clarity. Name products, standards and people precisely; consistent structured data helps disambiguate.
- Mentions elsewhere. Engines lean on sources that other reputable sites reference.
How GEO differs from SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of links | Be quoted or cited inside an answer |
| Unit | The page | The passage, fact or entity |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks | Citations, mentions, referred visits |
| Main traffic risk | Losing positions | Being used without a click (zero-click) |
GEO example
A page titled "Analytics tips" with a 400-word intro rarely gets cited. Rewritten as "What is cookieless tracking?" with a one-sentence definition, a comparison table and specific numbers, the same content becomes the passage Perplexity quotes — and ChatGPT-User starts fetching it several times a day.
How to measure GEO
There's no Search Console for AI answers yet. The measurable signals are: live-fetch crawler hits (ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User) on each page, referred visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai, and what those visitors do next. Manual or tool-based prompt tracking shows whether you're mentioned.
VisitTrack covers the first two: AI crawler tracking shows which AI bots fetch which pages (split into AI answers, indexing and training), and its referrer classification puts AI assistants in their own channel, with conversions and revenue next to them.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answer engines still rely heavily on search indexes and well-ranked, well-structured pages, so strong SEO is the foundation for GEO. GEO adds a focus on quotable passages, specifics and citations.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the older term from featured snippets and voice assistants; GEO is newer and focuses on generative AI engines that compose answers from several sources.

- Answer engine optimization (AEO)Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and assistants can use it as the direct answer to a question — in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI-generated answers.
- AI OverviewsAI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows above the regular results for some queries, combining information from several web pages and linking to sources.
- llms.txtllms.txt is a proposed standard for a Markdown file served at a website's root (/llms.txt) that gives large language models and AI tools a concise, curated summary of the site and links to its most useful content.
- AI crawlersAI crawlers are automated bots operated by AI companies that fetch web pages — either to collect training data for models, to index content for AI search, or live, to answer a user's question in an assistant like ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity.
- Zero-click searchA zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page itself answered the question — or the user refined the query or gave up.
- Structured dataStructured data is machine-readable markup added to a web page — usually Schema.org vocabulary written as JSON-LD — that describes what the page contains (an article, product, organization, FAQ, defined term) so search engines and other systems can understand it precisely.
