Analytics for freelancers: show clients what your work changed

The best analytics for freelancers proves that the site, redesign or campaign you delivered moved the client's numbers — leads, calls, sales, speed — in a dashboard the client can open themselves. It should install in minutes on any builder and track contact forms and phone clicks without custom code.

Updated

Freelancers are judged on results they often can't see. Without tracking, a redesign is "nice"; with a before/after comparison of contact-form submissions, it's a case study and a reason to renew.

VisitTrack records form submissions, mailto/tel clicks, file downloads and 404s automatically, works on WordPress, Webflow, Framer and plain HTML, and lets you invite the client as a viewer on their site only.

The metrics that prove a freelancer's work

  1. 1.Leads: form submits and contact clicks

form_submit (any form, values never read) and contact_click (mailto: and tel:) are automatic. For a local business, phone clicks from mobile are often the conversion.

  2. 2.Before/after conversion rate

Leads divided by visitors, compared to the previous period. Install on the old site a few weeks before launch to have a baseline.

  3. 3.Core Web Vitals on real devices

LCP, INP and CLS from the client's actual visitors — the evidence for performance work and a guard against regressions.

  4. 4.Search clicks per page

Search Console queries for the pages you rewrote or added.

  5. 5.Broken links and 404s

page_not_found events after a migration show which old URLs need redirects.

Questions freelancers need answered

Did the redesign get more enquiries?
Compare form submits and contact clicks for the period after launch with the period before, using the Overview's previous-period comparison.
Which old URLs broke after the migration?
Filter the page_not_found event by URL and add redirects for the busiest ones.
Is the campaign I set up working?
Tag the campaign links with UTMs and compare leads per campaign.
Can my client check numbers without asking me?
Invite them as a viewer limited to their site, or send them the public dashboard link.

How to set up client analytics as a freelancer

  1. Install on the client's site — ideally before the redesign

One tag in the head. Builder guides: WordPress, Webflow, Framer.

    <script defer data-site="SITE_ID" src="https://visitrack.app/tracker.js"></script>
  2. Lock down the hostname

In Settings → General → Allowed hostnames, add the live domain so staging copies don't pollute the numbers. Exclude your own visits with ?vt_ignore=1.

  3. Add the client's real conversion as a goal

Booking confirmations, quote requests, newsletter signups — a thank-you page as a page goal, or data-vt-goal on the button.

    <a href="/book" data-vt-goal="book_appointment">Book an appointment</a>
  4. Decide who owns the account

Option A: sites live on your account and you bill analytics into a care plan — events from all clients share one plan. Option B: the client creates their own account and invites you as an admin or member, so the data is theirs from day one.

  5. Hand over

Invite the client as a viewer, turn on the weekly report email, or share the public dashboard link.

Example: a redesign for a physiotherapy clinic

A small-business site, ~2,400 monthly visitors, redesigned by a freelance designer.

Example: a redesign for a physiotherapy clinic
MetricValueWhat it tells you
Visitors (30 days after vs before)2,410 vs 2,280+6% — traffic barely changed
tel: clicks (contact_click)148 vs 71+108%, 86% from mobile
Booking goal63 vs 38+66%
LCP (p75, mobile)1.8 s vs 4.2 sOld theme loaded a 2 MB slider
404 hits311 in week 1Five old URLs — redirected on day 3

Illustrative numbers for a typical site of this kind, not real customer data.

Traffic is flat, so the result is all conversion: twice as many calls from the same visitors. That table is the case study, and the retainer pitch writes itself.

What VisitTrack costs for a freelancer

Small-business sites generate few events; a dozen of them often share the lowest tiers.

Every feature is on every plan; the price only follows monthly events (pageviews, custom events and payments, counted across all your sites). Bot and AI-crawler hits and session replays are never billed. Yearly billing is ten months' price for twelve, every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card, and there's a one-time lifetime deal from $59.

Frequently asked questions

What analytics should freelancers install on client websites?

A lightweight tool that tracks leads automatically, works on any builder, and lets the client view their own dashboard. VisitTrack records form submits and phone/email clicks with no code and has a viewer role per site.

Does VisitTrack track contact form submissions automatically?

Yes. Every form submission is recorded as a form_submit event with the form's id, name or action path — field values are never read.

Can I track phone number clicks?

Yes. Clicks on tel: and mailto: links are recorded automatically as contact_click events.

Should the client own the analytics account?

It's cleaner long-term: the client creates the account and invites you. If you'd rather manage everything, keep their site on your account and bill it as part of a maintenance plan.

Can I compare before and after a redesign?

Yes, if the script was installed before the redesign. The Overview has a compare-to-previous-period toggle, and custom date ranges for exact before and after windows.

Does it work on Webflow, Framer and WordPress?

Yes. Paste the tag into the site-wide custom code field. Step-by-step guides are on the integrations page.
