VisitTrack vs Matomo
Updated
TL;DR — the verdict
Choose Matomo if…
you need GA-level depth with full data ownership — on-premise hosting, ecommerce product reports, custom dimensions, A/B tests and a CNIL-recognized consent exemption — and you have someone to configure it.
Choose VisitTrack if…
you're a founder or small team who wants revenue per channel straight from your payment provider, replays and funnels without plugin bundles, and a fraction of Matomo Cloud's price at high volume.
What is Matomo?
Matomo is the long-standing open-source Google Analytics alternative, used by governments, universities and enterprises. It's free to self-host under the GPL-3.0 (with paid plugin bundles), or available as Matomo Cloud, run by InnoCraft with data stored in Frankfurt. It's arguably the most feature-complete tool in this list: ecommerce analytics, goals with revenue, funnels, Users Flow, cohorts, A/B testing, heatmaps, session recordings, Search Console and Bing keywords, a GA importer and an official MCP server.
Matomo uses cookies by default, but can be configured to run without consent; Matomo says France's CNIL has confirmed it's exempt from consent in France when set up correctly. It has also moved quickly on AI traffic, adding an AI Assistants channel, AI agent detection and AI chatbot crawler reports between 2025 and 2026. The trade-off is weight and complexity: a large script, hundreds of reports, and costs that rise quickly with traffic.

Matomo vs VisitTrack pricing
Monthly list prices, as of October 2026. Matomo: public pricing page. VisitTrack: pricing, yearly billing gives 2 months free.
| Monthly traffic | VisitTrack | Matomo |
|---|---|---|
| 10k hits / month | $5/mo | $26 (lowest tier, 50k hits) |

| 1M hits / month | $59/mo | $204 |
- Matomo Cloud prices in EUR and USD (€22, €38 and €172 for the rows above, excluding tax); yearly billing is 10× monthly.
- Matomo hits include pageviews and events, close to how VisitTrack counts events.
- Self-hosting Matomo On-Premise is free; premium features such as heatmaps come in paid plugin bundles.
- Matomo's cloud plans include 30 websites and 30 team members; VisitTrack includes unlimited of both.
Is Matomo too complex for a small SaaS?
Often, yes. Matomo mirrors much of Google Analytics' breadth — that's its appeal for organizations leaving GA — but it also inherits GA's learning curve: dozens of report categories, segments, custom dimensions and plugins. For a two-person SaaS that wants to know which channels bring customers, much of it is noise.
VisitTrack puts the questions founders actually ask on one screen: visitors, sources, pages, goals, funnels and attributed revenue, with journeys and replays one click away.
Ecommerce tracking vs payment-provider attribution
Matomo's ecommerce analytics is excellent for stores: product, category and cart reports from tracking calls on your site. For SaaS billed through Stripe or Paddle, though, renewals and refunds happen inside the provider, and Matomo doesn't document a payment-provider integration.
VisitTrack takes payments directly from Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle and Razorpay webhooks, credits them to the first-touch source and subtracts refunds. See revenue attribution.

VisitTrack vs Matomo: FAQ
Is VisitTrack a Matomo alternative?
Yes, for teams who want a simpler, revenue-first tool. VisitTrack covers traffic, funnels, journeys, replays, heatmaps, Search Console and payment attribution. It doesn't offer on-premise hosting, A/B testing or Matomo's ecommerce product reports.
How much does Matomo Cloud cost?
As of October 2026, Matomo Cloud starts at $26/month (€22) for up to 50k hits, $42 (€38) for 100k and $204 (€172) for 1M, excluding tax. Self-hosting Matomo On-Premise is free, with paid plugin bundles for premium features.
Does Matomo need a cookie banner?
It depends on configuration. Matomo uses cookies by default, but can be configured to track without consent, and says France's CNIL has confirmed it's exempt from consent there when set up correctly. VisitTrack's cookieless mode stores nothing on the device. This is general information, not legal advice.
Is Matomo's script heavier than VisitTrack's?
Yes. The matomo.js we measured in October 2026 was about 22 KB gzipped; VisitTrack's tracker is about 5 KB.
Can I import Matomo data into VisitTrack?
Yes, if you export visit-level data. Matomo's API and on-premise database expose individual visits and actions, which you can convert to NDJSON and load with VisitTrack's historical import.
Does Matomo track AI crawlers?
Yes. Matomo added AI chatbot reports in March 2026, using logs from Cloudflare, CloudFront or WordPress. VisitTrack tracks AI crawlers with a small server-side snippet and verifies them by reverse DNS — see AI crawler tracking.
