Matomo alternatives

8 best Matomo alternatives (2026): honest comparison

The best Matomo alternatives in 2026 are Plausible (a far simpler cookie-free dashboard), Umami (lightweight and free to self-host), PostHog (if you need product analytics and replays), Fathom (hosted simplicity) and VisitTrack (revenue attribution built in). Teams leave Matomo because its interface is complex, self-hosted MySQL installs slow down at high traffic, Matomo Cloud and premium plugins get expensive, and it uses cookies unless you turn them off.

Updated

The short answer

Best simple alternative
Plausible Analytics — a one-page, cookie-free dashboard; open source.
Best free self-hosted
Umami — MIT-licensed, light, with funnels and journeys.
Best for revenue attribution
VisitTrack — payments from Stripe, Paddle and more credited to channels.
Best open-source with depth
PostHog — product analytics, replays, heatmaps and experiments.
Best hosted, zero maintenance
Fathom Analytics — simple, fast and cookie-free.

Why people look for Matomo alternatives

A complex interface

Matomo was built to replace Google Analytics feature for feature, and it shows: dozens of reports, segments and settings. Teams that left GA for simplicity often find Matomo nearly as dense.

Performance at scale when self-hosted

Self-hosted Matomo on PHP and MySQL needs report archiving (cron jobs) and database tuning as traffic grows; Hacker News threads repeatedly describe installs that slow down at high volume.

Costs add up

As of October 2026 Matomo Cloud costs $42/month for 100K hits and $204 for 1M (monthly billing), where "hits" include events, downloads and outlinks. On-Premise is free, but heatmaps, recordings, funnels and Search Console keywords are premium plugins, with bundles starting at €275/month.

Cookies by default

Matomo sets cookies unless you disable them, and its own FAQ notes that in some countries (Germany, for example) even its cookieless tracker may still need consent. Tools built cookie-free from the start are simpler to reason about.

A heavy script

A Matomo tracker with plugin features loaded is tens of kilobytes gzipped, compared with 1–5 KB for most privacy-first tools.

How we picked these Matomo alternatives

We’re VisitTrack, so we’re one of the options below — and we list our own drawbacks the same way we list everyone else’s. Prices and plan limits come from each vendor’s public pricing page and documentation as of October 2026; where a vendor doesn’t publish a number, we say so instead of guessing. We weighed:

  1. Simplicity. The main reason teams leave Matomo — can a marketer answer their own questions?
  2. Data ownership. Open source and self-hosting, since many Matomo users chose it for that.
  3. Features Matomo charges extra for. Funnels, heatmaps, recordings, Search Console — included or not.
  4. Cookie-free operation. Without configuration.
  5. Total cost. Including hosting and maintenance time for self-hosted options.

The 8 best Matomo alternatives in 2026

1.Plausible Analytics

plausible.io

A lightweight, open-source, cookie-free web analytics tool with a single-page dashboard, hosted in the EU.

Best for: Matomo users who mostly looked at visitors, sources and pages.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Plausible replaces Matomo's sprawling reports with one cookie-free page, keeps data in the EU, and is open source. Its Business plan adds funnels and revenue goals. Compared with Matomo Cloud, it's considerably cheaper at the same volume.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Priced by monthly pageviews, monthly billing: Starter from $9/month (10K pageviews, 1 site), Growth from $14, Business from $19; at 100K pageviews Starter is $19 and Business $39, at 1M Starter is $69 and Business $139. Funnels, journeys and ecommerce revenue goals are Business-only. Yearly billing gives 2 months free. 30-day free trial, no card. The self-hosted Community Edition is free.

Key features

  • One-page dashboard: sources, pages, countries, devices
  • Goals, custom events and properties
  • Google Search Console keywords
  • Funnels, journeys and revenue goals on Business

Pros

  • Very simple to read
  • EU-hosted, cookie-free and open source
  • Tiny script (about 1–2.5 KB)

Cons

  • Funnels and revenue locked to the top tier
  • No session replay or heatmaps
  • Self-hosted edition lags the cloud on features

2.Umami

umami.is

An open-source (MIT), cookie-free analytics app you can self-host on Node and PostgreSQL, or use as Umami Cloud — now with funnels, journeys, attribution, session replay and heatmaps.

Best for: Self-hosters who want a lighter stack than PHP and MySQL.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Umami runs on Node and PostgreSQL, is MIT-licensed, cookie-free, and includes funnels, journeys, retention and even replays and heatmaps when self-hosted — features Matomo sells as plugins.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Self-hosting is free. Umami Cloud: Hobby free (100K events, 1 site, 6 months retention); Pro $20/month (1M events, up to 20 sites, then $0.00003 per event); Business $200/month (10M events, session replays and heatmaps, 5-year retention). 14-day trial on paid plans.

Key features

  • Pageviews, referrers, UTMs and custom events
  • Funnels, journeys, retention and goals
  • First- or last-click attribution report
  • Session replay and heatmaps (self-hosted or Cloud Business)

Pros

  • Free cloud tier and an MIT self-host with nearly every feature
  • Simple, clean UI
  • Light script (about 2 KB)

Cons

  • Big jump from $20 to $200 for replays and heatmaps on Cloud
  • Revenue isn't automatic or broken down by source
  • Self-hosting means owning security and upgrades

3.PostHog

posthog.com

An open-source product platform that bundles product analytics, web analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse.

Best for: Teams that used Matomo's heatmaps, recordings and A/B tests.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: PostHog bundles replay, heatmaps, experiments and product analytics with a large free cloud tier and a cookieless mode. Its self-hosted edition is hobby-grade, so it's not a like-for-like replacement for an on-premise Matomo.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Usage-based per product with a free tier that resets monthly: 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 1,500 survey responses and 1M warehouse rows. Events then cost $0.00005 each (1–2M), falling to $0.000009 above 250M. Optional Boost ($250/month) and Scale ($750/month) bundles add SSO, white-labeling and priority support.

Key features

  • Product analytics: funnels, retention, paths, cohorts, SQL
  • Web analytics dashboard and session replay with heatmaps
  • Feature flags, A/B tests and surveys
  • Revenue analytics from Stripe data, EU Cloud in Frankfurt

Pros

  • Huge, transparent free tier
  • Replaces several tools with one SDK
  • Real cookieless mode and an EU region

Cons

  • Bills grow as you stack products, and autocapture inflates events
  • Dense interface built for engineering-led teams
  • Self-hosting is hobby-grade only

4.VisitTrack

visitrack.app

Privacy-first web analytics with revenue attribution built in: traffic, journeys, funnels and goals, plus every payment from your billing provider credited to the channel, campaign and page that brought the customer.

Best for: SaaS teams that used Matomo ecommerce tracking to understand revenue by channel.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Instead of implementing ecommerce events, VisitTrack connects to Stripe, Polar, Lemon Squeezy, Paddle or Razorpay and attributes each payment to the referrer, campaign and landing page. Search Console keywords, funnels, replays and click heatmaps are on every plan, from $5/month. It's hosted-only — not a fit if you chose Matomo to keep data on your own servers. See VisitTrack vs Matomo.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Priced by monthly events (pageviews + custom events; bots are never billed), every feature on every plan: $5/month for 10k events, $19 for 100k, $59 for 1M, up to $179 for 10M. Yearly billing gives two months free. 14-day free trial, no card required; no free plan. A lifetime deal starts at $59 one-time.

Key features

  • Revenue by referrer, UTM campaign and landing page, refunds subtracted
  • Live visitors and 3D globe, journeys, funnels, goals, custom events
  • Google Search Console keywords and AI crawler tracking (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot)
  • Session replays (opt-in, sampled) and click heatmaps
  • REST API, CLI and an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor

Pros

  • Answers "which channel brought paying customers" without a data warehouse
  • All features on the cheapest plan — you only pay for volume
  • Bots and AI crawlers filtered at ingest and never billed

Cons

  • Newer product with a smaller community than Plausible, Matomo or GA
  • Hosted only: no self-hosted or open-source edition
  • No permanent free plan, and the default mode uses a first-party id — cookieless mode shortens returning-visitor history to a day

5.Fathom Analytics

usefathom.com

A hosted, cookie-free web analytics tool focused on a fast, simple dashboard, with every feature on every plan.

Best for: Teams that want to stop maintaining analytics entirely.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Fathom is hosted, cookie-free, includes 50 sites and every feature on every plan, and has a dashboard anyone can read. It has far less depth than Matomo — no funnels or segments.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Priced by monthly pageviews (events count toward the limit): $15/month for 100K with 50 sites, $25 for 200K, $45 for 500K, $60 for 1M, $100 for 2M, $200 for 10M. Yearly billing gives 2 months free. 7-day trial; card required.

Key features

  • Single-screen dashboard
  • Custom events with values
  • Google Search Console integration
  • EU isolation: EU visitors anonymized on EU servers

Pros

  • Simple and fast
  • All features on every plan, 50 sites included
  • Low price per pageview at 100K+

Cons

  • No funnels, replays or heatmaps
  • No free plan; trial needs a card
  • Anonymized data is stored on US infrastructure

6.Simple Analytics

www.simpleanalytics.com

A Dutch, cookie-free web analytics tool that stores no personal data and keeps all data in the Netherlands, with an AI assistant for questions about your stats.

Best for: EU organizations that chose Matomo for data sovereignty.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Simple Analytics keeps all data in the Netherlands and collects no personal data, so it addresses the same sovereignty concerns without running servers. It's much simpler than Matomo.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Free plan: 5 websites, 30-day history, badge required. Paid plans in EUR: Simple €20/month for 100K pageviews (10 sites, 1 user), €30 for 250K, €40 for 500K, €60 for 1M, €160 for 10M; extra users €20/month. Yearly billing gives 2 months free. 14-day trial, no card.

Key features

  • Cookie-free dashboard with AI assistant
  • Goals, funnels and automated events
  • Data never leaves the Netherlands
  • GA4 side-by-side proof of concept (enterprise)

Pros

  • Strictest EU data stance in this group
  • Usable free plan
  • No personal data stored by design

Cons

  • No revenue attribution
  • No replays or heatmaps
  • Higher entry price and per-seat charges

Key features

  • Funnels, goals and custom events
  • Real-time globe and user journeys
  • Search Console integration
  • Session replay on Pro

Pros

  • Open source with a large community
  • EU hosting (Germany, Finland)
  • Broad feature set for its price

Cons

  • No revenue attribution
  • Replay only on Pro
  • Heavier script than most privacy tools (about 11 KB gzipped)

8.Swetrix

swetrix.com

An open-source (AGPL-3.0) analytics suite combining cookie-free web analytics with error tracking, performance monitoring and, on Plus, session replay, feature flags and A/B tests.

Why it’s a Matomo alternative: Swetrix is open source and EU-hosted, cookie-free, and combines web analytics, funnels, error tracking and Web Vitals in one lighter tool.

Pricing (as of October 2026): Priced by monthly events, monthly billing: Standard $19/month for 100K, $79 for 1M, $249 for 10M (10 sites); Plus $39/month for 100K, $179 for 1M, adding replay, feature flags and A/B tests. Matomo alternatives compared side by side

“Cookieless” means the tool can measure without storing an identifier on the visitor’s device; “revenue attribution” means payments from a billing provider are tied back to the traffic source automatically, not typed in as a goal value. “Partly” is explained in the cell.

How to switch from Matomo

  1. Export what you need: self-hosters can keep the MySQL database; Matomo Cloud and On-Premise both offer report exports and an API for raw visit data.
  2. List the Matomo reports and plugins you actually use — ecommerce, heatmaps and goals usually matter, while most custom reports don't.
  3. Install the new tool alongside Matomo and compare visitors and top sources for two to four weeks; differences in bot filtering and cookie use will show up.
  4. Recreate goals and funnels; for ecommerce revenue, either send events or connect your billing provider if the new tool supports it.
  5. Remove the Matomo tracker (and Matomo Tag Manager container), then decommission the server or cancel the Cloud plan.

Our verdict

If simplicity is why you're leaving, Plausible or Fathom will feel like a relief. If you want to keep self-hosting with a lighter stack, Umami is the best fit, and PostHog if you relied on Matomo's heatmaps, recordings and A/B tests.

If your Matomo setup existed mostly to connect marketing to revenue through ecommerce tracking, VisitTrack does that by connecting to your billing provider — provided hosted-only is acceptable for your data policy.

Matomo alternatives: FAQ

What is the best alternative to Matomo?

Plausible is the best Matomo alternative for teams that want simpler, cookie-free analytics, and Umami is the best lightweight self-hosted alternative. PostHog fits teams that need product analytics, replays and heatmaps.

Is Matomo free?

Matomo On-Premise is free and open source (GPL-3.0) if you host it yourself; premium plugins such as heatmaps, session recordings and funnels cost extra. Matomo Cloud starts at $26/month for 50K hits on monthly billing as of October 2026, with a 21-day free trial.

Does Matomo need a cookie banner?

Matomo uses cookies by default, which generally requires consent in the EU. It can be configured to run without cookies, but Matomo's own FAQ notes that some regulators (for example in Germany) may still expect consent for its cookieless tracker. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is Matomo better than Google Analytics?

Matomo is better for data ownership and privacy: it can be self-hosted, doesn't sample data, and keeps data on your servers. Google Analytics is free at any volume and integrates with Google Ads. Feature depth is comparable.

Why is my self-hosted Matomo slow?

Self-hosted Matomo slows down mostly because reports are archived in the browser instead of by a cron job, or because the MySQL database isn't tuned for the traffic. Matomo documents both fixes; at very high volume, many teams move to Matomo Cloud or a ClickHouse-based tool.

Which Matomo alternatives are open source?

Plausible (AGPL-3.0), Umami (MIT), PostHog (MIT core), Rybbit (AGPL-3.0), Swetrix (AGPL-3.0), OpenPanel (AGPL-3.0) and GoatCounter (EUPL) are open source. Fathom, Simple Analytics and VisitTrack are closed-source hosted services.
